Forced into playing in the NBA Playoffs opening round for the first time in anyone’s memory, the Celtics routed the San Antonio Spurs with a 2-0 sweep in the 1977 Eastern Conference First Round. Jo Jo White led the way with 62 points over both games. Their next matchup featured a well-rested Philadelphia 76ers squad in the semifinals, where Boston fell in seven games – including four contests decided by six or fewer points. In the Game 7 defensive struggle, the Celtics held Julius “Dr. J.” Erving to just 14 points, but left Lloyd (aka World B.) Free open for a game-high 27 points on 27 shots in just 26 minutes. On Boston’s side, Dave Cowens (11 points, 27 rebounds) and Curtis Rowe (14 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded a double-double.
