One player missing from the 1981-82 preseason guide was Boston’s second-round pick out of BYU, Danny Ainge. A third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays since 1979, and apparently disillusioned by the 1981 MLB players strike, Ainge made it clear he wanted to play in the NBA instead. After a protracted legal battle, the Celtics bought out Ainge’s contract with the Blue Jays in November and he suited up for Boston for the first time on December 9. The rest is Celtics history.
